My love of history, traditions and culture have led me to develop a strong admiration of graveyards, cemeteries, and other "resting" places. While at the same time, my love of themes, dress up, and good music have led me to become obsessed with visually stunning movies like Marie Antoinette, Fantasia, and Almost Famous.
Leave it to LA to figure out a way to combine cemeteries and visually stunning movies! Over a year ago now I was scrolling through instagram when I saw photos of girls dressed up as the Centaurettes from Fantasia on @cutiesatcinespia. I was floored. I'm not an LA native (nor am I connected to cosplay), so seeing an image of girls who literally engineered a centaur costume to wear blew my mind. It wasn't even comic-con or halloween... I had to figure out why they were so dressed up, and why I had somehow missed a Fantasia themed party.
After some sleuthing I learned that these girls were NOT at a party but an outside movie screening put on by Cinespia! They screen movies (seemingly) every weekend in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (see a list of notable internments at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery here). Movie goers literally lay out on the grass picnic style above movie celebrities resting (somewhat) peacefully below them. Before each movie, Cinespia treats their guests to a themed photoshoot room and a band or DJ. During the movie, we were gifted free Heineken beers (although we also brought our own beers!) and could purchase snacks and drinks. For those interested, they even had CBD coffee being served during the film!
S and I went to see Almost Famous about a month ago now. We missed the themed photoshoot room (I was shooting with another photographer earlier) and made it right before the movie started, but we had an AMAZING TIME! Everyone around us was friendly, the staff was extremely helpful, and the grass was ...er... very, very lush. We went for picnic style (blanket) seating this time but learned that if you sit in the back you can sit in your own lawn chairs. I've been dying to get back but haven't been home a single weekend since! My calendar is booked through the end of September right now, but if you're in the LA area I highly recommend checking out their upcoming movies and going to as many as you can!
Check out their movie lineup here and start planning those outfits! Especially all my witchy women out there... the 8th annual SLEEPOVER night is August 11th and includes THE CRAFT, PRACTICAL MAGIC, and THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK. If I wasn't at my Bachelorette that weekend I would be spending the night in the cemetery with you all!
P.S. I already had severe regrets about not going to the Raiders of the Lost Ark screening (the original three Indy movies are in my top five favorite movies), but I also just discovered that my doppelgänger Anna Kendrick WENT TO IT! Gah. I don't usually regret anything...
