The most challenging part of the "Plastic free for the Sea" challenge has been avoiding plastics at summer social events. I joked about avoiding red solo cups on the 4th but now that I'm almost done with week two I can honestly say my eyes have been forced wide open. Our global society has a serious plastic waste problem.
While doing some research on humans and plastic waste I found several articles addressing the issue of plastic trash washing up onto Hawaiian beaches. The trash is coming mainly from the mainland and Asia and is carried to the Hawaiian islands across the Pacific. Despite various efforts to pick up the trash, it's still a huge problem. The easiest solution?? For everyone to stop using so much "one-use" plastics!

Tips to use less plastic:
1. Stop using plastic straws
Get stainless steel straws instead, they're reusable, easy to wash and to carry in your bag! Get your own here.
2. Use reusable shopping bags at the grocery store and BEYOND
We all know there are reusable grocery bags, but did you know there are also reusable bulk item and produce bags as well? This is something I learned during this months Plastic Free for the Sea challenge.
3. No Gum!
Apparently "synthetic rubber" is plastic. Ditch the bloat and the plastic.
4. Look for groceries that come in cardboard boxes rather than plastic bags
Wholefoods has a ton of goods that come in cardboard boxes! As do most farmers markets... speaking of...
5. Shop for groceries at Farmers Markets
Produce comes in cardboard containers and you're supporting local farmers! Avoid Trader Joe's individually wrapped in plastic produce at all costs.
6. Eat at your favorite local eateries instead of ordering delivery
Delivery food usually comes in a plastic container, with plastic utensils, in a plastic bag. Go out and experience the atmosphere at your local restaurants instead.
7. Replace disposable cups with travel mugs and reusable water bottles.
8. Eat all of your food! Or bring your own leftover container.
9. Bring a fun cup or goblet to social gatherings
Personally I use Madonna Inn goblets when I have guests over now and I recently found these stainless steel red solo cups!! They exist!!
