For the Month of July I've pledged to not use "one-use" plastics (anything intended to be thrown away after one use) in order to keep our ocean clean! Today is the last day to sign up with the mermaids from SaveTheMermaids.org , so go to their site and try to sign up quickly!
I decided to give you guys some updates on how I'm doing throughout the challenge once I realized just how difficult this is actually going to be. When I signed up I thought, "It'll be easy! I already have a steel straw and tons of travel mugs." ...And then I ordered Chinese food.
Let's just say I'm lucky that was still in June.
Two challenges that already stick out are:
*Way more challenging than expected... whoops.*
The first challenge became painfully obvious thanks to 4th of July weekend. On Friday at a food truck event I failed immdeiately when my friend handed me my drink ... in a plastic cup. Which then reminded me that entertainment sites will serve drinks in plastic cups everywhere I go this summer. And I don't think they would put their drinks in a mug I brought because they want you to only use their cup, no matter if its for marketing (their logo is on the plastic cups) or for security (Disneyland's neon colored cups), or health reasons (maybe? I'm guessing on this one).
The second challenge made me second guess if I could handle going plastic free for a whole month. Today we were going grocery shopping for the Fourth at your average grocery store. I told S I was trying not to buy items with plastic as we walked past a tower of one-use water bottles. But we needed hot dog and hamburger buns. They were all wrapped in plastic. The meat? It too was wrapped in plastic. Even produce items seemed limited with leafy greens, berries, and certain veggies only available pre-wrapped in plastic bags or containers. My experience today really opened my eyes, and I've decided that my best bet is the farmers market or local Whole Foods. Although they use a lot of plastics too... sigh.
*Plastics... everywhere you looked!*
My questions so far are:
In the meantime, help us try to make at least a small different this month by pledging to go plastic free for the sea! Go to SaveTheMermaids.org to sign up now!
