A few weeks ago, while flipping through the spring Victoria's Secret catalog, one item in particular caught my eye. A gorgeous maxi dress with light, tie-dye-esque coloring. I had to do a double take to understand the true genius behind THIS dress. The texture wasn't your average simple cotton maxi, but a delicate knife pleat.

The knife pleat pattern gives the garment a more rippling effect than your average maxi skirt does, and it also gives the dress a more playful touch.
I've seen two knife pleated maxi skirts floating around this past week; one was being worn by someone at one of the LA Kings vs. SJ Sharks games in the underground bar, and another I just saw while boutique shopping in my hometown today (sadly, they didn't have my size). The lightweight fabric and knife pleat immediately draws attention to the garments.
Knife pleated maxi dresses make dressing up for summer a total breeze, but if you want to be able to pair it with your favorite crop top this summer, I recommend getting the skirt version. The pastel teal skirt above is also from the Victoria's secret Spring catalog (modeled by Magdalena Frackowiak and worn in LA by Super Model Alessandra Ambrosio). I absolutely love how Alessandra paired hers with a pastel pink crop and a light denim button-up, the perfect summer BBQ outfit.
This skirt comes in a variety of colors and can be dressed up or down. A cool straw hat, a tank, and your favorite bikini make the skirt beach ready while a black embellished top tucked into the black pleated skirt makes in instantly elegant ensemble.

Of course, you don't have to go with the maxi skirt option while shopping for a knife pleated skirt. Topshop at Nordstroms has adorable mini skirt options you can test out. I love this asymmetrical skirt (above) in pastel pink (I just would have styled it differently…). This skirt can easily be a summer go to paired with cute sandals and a crop top (I would choose a simple solid color top) and then reused in the colder months with boots and an oversized knit sweater. And BONUS: you can use it at the next toga party you find yourself out (gooooodbye bedsheets).

I'm still on the hunt for the perfect pleated skirt for my body… until then..
